New research and product development center in the Vantaa Campus
In the spring of 2017, Vaisala started a project aiming to build a new research and product development center in the Vantaa Campus. The new R&D building would support Vaisala's varied product development activities, programs and varied employee requirements.Vaisala's R&D develops new products, programs, applications as well as services for environmental and industrial measurement.
Agile Work was selected as partner for the user-centric define phase, which was carried out close co-operation with the project planning team, including external architects, project planning consultants and representatives of the internal working group.
Approach
Collecting critical development ideas from employees, identifying essential planning requirements and developing the keydesign drivers.
Helped to discover main user groups and create understanding of the different employee experience journeys
The project aims to create premises to support Vaisala R&D operation unit, as well as joint development functions. The current R&D development premises are a combination of designated workstations, private offices and a large number of special laboratories and technical facilities based in a number of different buildings. Over the years the R&D function has become more versatile and outgrown the current facilities.
The overall objective of the to move to an activity based R&D building which would would combine both laboratories and work environments. The purpose of the new premises is to support the changing needs of the R&D organization and enable agile development within in the company.
During the project Agile Work helped to collect critical development ideas from employees, identify essential planning requirements and develop the keydesign drivers. The participatory research also served to kick start the change management within the R&D organization and inspire the Vaisala employees. On an organizational level it helped to discover main user groups and create understanding of the different employee experience journeys.
Impact
Agile Work is like UX design for workplaces. They are really customer oriented and challenge the status quo.

During the project Agile Work delivered:
* Description of the main users (persona) and groups, their needs as well as interaction with other teams.
* Description the Employee Journeys describing the key interaction moments, spaces and objects, both physical and virtual tools
* Defined list of different spatial types of describing visually their main uses and functionalities.
* Developed functional spatial concept and layout
* Description of Vaisala's R&D cooperation between departments and teams.
* Proposal for he location of the teams, based on the future architectural design.
