Renewal of Finland’s Oldest Library and Service Design Process

Rikhardinkatu Library is the oldest functioning public library in Finland and an important part of Helsinki’s cultural history. The city aims to strengthen its role as a cultural destination that supports the vitality of the city centre, with a particular focus on children and families. The children’s collection will be significantly expanded.
The service design process carried out in 2024 gathered insights from users, staff, and experts on the library’s future needs. The resulting spatial manual guides the upcoming renovation, defines the functional principles of the spaces, and ensures that the renewal brings together the building’s historical character with modern, accessible and flexible service areas.

Goals of the Renovation and User-Centred Service Environment

The renovation of the Rikhardinkatu Library is planned to take place in the coming years. The aim is to renew the building’s technical systems, improve accessibility, and modernise the service environment while preserving its historical value. The project supports Helsinki’s goal of strengthening library services in the city centre and increasing visitor numbers.
The design emphasises user-centredness: the spaces will be adaptable, versatile areas for reading, learning, playing and working. Particular focus is placed on children and families, while adults will also have access to calm areas for working and relaxing. Flexibility enables larger events and increases the library’s utilisation rate.

The Future Rikhardinkatu – A Cultural Meeting Place

The renewal aims to transform Rikhardinkatu Library into an open and inclusive meeting place for future generations. The emphasis on children and families reinforces the library’s role in supporting everyday learning and community life. The expanded children’s collection and diverse programming will attract new visitors and increase usage.
Rikhardinkatu complements Oodi’s modern services by offering layered history and rich cultural spatial experiences. The renovation preserves the building’s architectural character while enabling new ways of using the spaces. The Rikhardinkatu Library has evolved over time, and the upcoming renovation aims to secure the conditions for modern library services well into the future.
